Tau Psi Chapter - Methodist University
Fayetteville, North Carolina
Chartered April 20, 2014
In the fall semester of 2013, twelve ambitious young college women approached the administration of Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC with a bold proposition: to establish a chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. on their campus. Their journey was one of determination and vision, culminating in the realization of their dream on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014, when Tau Psi chapter was officially chartered. Led by Linda Gilliam, the 17th Mid Atlantic Regional Director, Tau Psi became the 126th chapter in the region and the first National Panhellenic Council (NPHC) sorority at Methodist University.
The Charter Members of Tau Psi—Erica Williams, Jada Aponte, Chare' Perkins, and others—set a precedent of excellence and leadership from the outset. Chare Perkins was elected as the chapter’s inaugural president, paving the way for successive leaders like Jaylynne Williams, Joyelle Davis, and Kiara Brown. Over the years, Tau Psi grew in both size and impact, initiating new members and expanding its influence within the Methodist University community.
In April 2015, five new members were initiated, marking the beginning of a tradition of excellence in membership intake processes. Subsequent intakes in 2017, 2019, and 2021 added to Tau Psi’s ranks, each bringing new energy and dedication to the sorority’s mission. The chapter’s involvement extended beyond campus as well, participating actively in regional conferences and events, and earning recognition for outstanding programs like the “Pink Goes Red” Heart Health Workshop, and “Balloons for Mental Health Awareness”. The chapter continued to serve and make an impact on their campus during the Covid Pandemic. These programs included supporting the American Heart Associations Go Red For Women by sponsoring a virtual Zumba event with Andre Carter; Black History Month Virtual “HerStory Series” which highlighted women involved in political activism and the arts like the legendary Nina Simone. They also featured black owned businesses on their social media pages; sponsored a virtual poetry slam and a produced a video the university student population on what it is important to vote.
Academically, Tau Psi members consistently excelled, earning accolades such as the highest GPA among all Greek organizations on campus in 2016. Individual achievements were also celebrated, with members being inducted into prestigious honor societies like Order of Omega and Phi Alpha. Beyond academics, Tau Psi members made significant contributions to campus life through leadership roles in various student organizations and community service initiatives.
One notable achievement came in 2019 when Akili Jubilani, a Spring initiate, was crowned Homecoming Queen—a testament to the chapter’s influence and popularity on campus. Despite being one of the youngest chapters, Tau Psi’s impact was felt far and wide, embodying their motto of being "Tenacious and Poised."
As Tau Psi continues to grow and evolve, their journey serves as an inspiration—a story of perseverance, sisterhood, and commitment to excellence. With each milestone achieved, the legacy of Tau Psi chapter at Methodist University continues to flourish, promising a future of continued success and influence in the community they proudly serve.
